Pippali (Piper Longum)

Pippali is one of the traditional plants that are used both for preparation of exquisite culinary dishes as well as for the treatment and prophylaxis of various diseases. In Sanskrit it has many more names: vaidehi, madaghi, kana and so on.

Studies have shown this herb to have the following actions:-

 

Anti-arthritic: Piperine reduces inflammation and joint damage by inhibiting the expression of interleukin (IL6), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP13) and the production of prostaglandin PGE2.

Anti-osteoporotic: Piperine increases the amount of collagenous fibers in the matrix of bone tissue and areas of regeneration for stronger bones.

Enhance Digestion: Piperine remarkably increases pancreatic lipase activity and stimulates pancreatic amylase, trypsin, and chymotrypsin for healthy digestion.

Anti-asthmatic: Piperine reduces airway inflammation and hyper-responsiveness by inhibiting the release of Th2- mediated cytokines (IL‐4, IL‐5, IL‐13) and eosinophil infiltration.

Anti-histaminic: Acts as antihistaminic by inhibiting antigen induced histamine release and inhibits antigen induced degranulation.

Hepatoprotective: Piperine protects liver by virtue of its antioxidant properties, it reduces lipid peroxidation and preserve the depletion of glutathione in the liver.
