Mandukparni (Centella asiatica)



Mandukaparni is an ancient herb and the name has been derived from Sanskrit which means (the leaf resembles the feet of a frog).

In Ayurveda, this is an important ingredient of several compound formulations. Mandukaparni belongs to the group of drugs known as medhya rasayanas (psychotropic drugs). Presence of bioactive constituents make the herb a potent memory enhancer, imparts anti-convulsant, anti-depressant, wound healing, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial activity.

 

Studies have shown this herb to have the following actions:-

Balances neurotransmitters level: Mandukparni improves mental clarity, concentration and reduces mental stress by balancing the neurotransmitter -dopamine, norepinephrine or serotonin secretion and revitalizing the neurons (brain cells).

Prevent dementia: Mandukparni helps to prevent dementia. Its antioxidant properties helps to reduce oxidative damage to the neurons and attenuates memory impairment.

Alzheimer preventive: Mandukparni has neuroprotective action attributed to its several active constituents. It reduces neurotoxicity and cell death caused by β-amyloid. It also attenuates β-amyloid induced changes in the brain.
