Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)

Tinospora cordifolia commonly named as “Guduchi” is known for its immense application in the treatment of various diseases in the traditional ayurvedic literature. Tinospora cordifolia is a shrub that is native to India. Its root, stems, and leaves are used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Tinospora cordifolia is used for diabetes, high cholesterol, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), upset stomach, gout, lymphoma and other cancers, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), hepatitis, peptic ulcer disease (PUD), fever, gonorrhea, syphilis, and to boost the immune system.

 

Studies have shown this herb to have the following actions:-

Anti-inflammatory: Guduchi inhibits COX and LOX synthesis enzymes (Prostaglandins and nitric oxide) and helps reduces pain and inflammation in muscles and joints.

Immunomodulator: Guduchi controls chronic inflammation and tissue damage by modulating immune response and down-regulating several pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-1β, IL-6, IL-23, TNF-α and MIP-1 

Prebiotic: Guduchi is natural prebiotics, it nourishes and repopulates individual gut good bacteria (lactobacillus and bifidobacterium).

Immune booster: Guduchi boost the phagocytic activity of macrophages which are the first line of defense in our body and play a crucial role in innate (nonspecific) and adaptive (specific) immunity. Also it remarkably augments the production of cytokines, up-regulation of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and enhanced antigen specific recall response.

Hepatoprotective: Guduchi modulates the activity of Kupffer cells (tissue macrophages of liver) and prevents progressive inflammatory and fibrotic changes in liver.

Detoxifier and Anti-acne: Guduchi strengthens the liver and aid it in cleaning the body toxins responsible for acne, it also inhibits the growth of Propionibacterium acnes and reduce inflammation associated with acne by inhibiting prostaglandin, bradykinin and histamine.
