Berberine is a protoberberine alkaloid that is found in several plants such as goldenseal, barberry, phellodendron. Berberine and its derivatives have a wide spectrum of pharmacological activities. It is used in many traditional medicines for various therapeutic uses.

Berberine when used along with its derivatives or in combination with other pharmaceutical active compounds shows many benefits in cancer, inflammation, diabetes, depression, hypertension and in various infectious areas.

Clinical study is also reported that berberine and its derivatives exhibits a wide range of pharmacological functions that forms a multipotential drug even with a poor bioavailability and solubility. Berberines containing plants shows successful development when used with other polyherbal formulations.
